When I Get Free" (stylized "When I Get Free II" on the album) is a 2Pac song, produced by Bread & Water and recorded at Musiplex Studios in Atlanta, Georgia on June 16, 1994, 2Pac's 23rd birthday (according to the Master reel - the other song recorded during that session was "Thug Style"). The studio session was engineered by Anthony "Jenko" Jenkins.
Tupac might've written the lyrics to the song while in jail in early May 1994 for a gun charge. Duane Nettlesbey said that Tupac was pissed that nobody bailed him out and recorded "Fuck All Y'all" once he got out.
The song was recorded for Stay True, the solo album Tupac was working at the time, which was scrapped months later, when Tupac started working on Fuck the World/Me Against the World. While in jail, Tupac wanted to release it on his 4th album titled R U Still Down (which leaked: Pre-dr tape 9-13-95), but the album was scrapped around 10 days before Tupac's release from jail for an unknown reason, so Tupac decided that "When I Get Free" would be one of the few songs he would re-record for his new Death Row album, which he did on his second day after his release (October 14, 1995, prod. by Johnny "J"), but that will be a different thread.
A short skit was made for the Stay True album. It was pasted over the intro on the Stay True mix.
